Help Resettled Refugees Take Root

Help Resettled Refugees Take Root
Thursday, March 11, 2010, 6pm to 8:30pm
MN Church Center, 122 Franklin Avenue W, Minneapolis, MN 55404
Imagine you are a refugee fleeing persecution, arriving in Minnesota knowing no one. You are greeted at the airport and helped in your first months by a team of Muslim and Christian volunteers working together. In your homeland you only knew people of your own religious tradition, or your experience with other religions was one of distrust and persecution. But here your interfaith sponsors help you find a home, a job and make a successful transition to self- sufficiency. Gradually you build a new life of hope, safety, peacefulness and connection.
Come for dinner and learn about how you can be part of the Minnesota Council of Churches innovative new program, Taking Root. Taking Root participants will create community by joining an interfaith co- sponsorship group to welcome a refugee family who will be arriving in Minnesota in 2010. We are looking for individuals who are interested in joining a team that will get to know their neighbors of a different faith while working together to show our new arrivals that the world is not a cold, merciless place but rather a world of warmth, compassion and welcome. Co- sponsoring a refugee family involves a variety of responsibilities, but holds enormous benefits. Sponsors are enriched not only by their contribution to healing a broken world, but also by the friendships they make.
Please RSVP by calling Lynea Geinert at 612-230- 3243 or by e-mail at lynea.geinert@mnchurches.org

Secondhand Smoke May Start Damaging Arteries During Childhood
HealthDay (3/2, Dotinga) reported that children "exposed to secondhand smoke face a higher risk of developing early signs of clogged arteries by the time they're 13," according to a study published in the journal Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes. Researchers "examined 494 children and found that those exposed to secondhand smoke between the ages of eight and 13 were more likely to show thickening of blood vessel walls." The investigators "also found that the kids who were exposed to the most tobacco smoke had higher levels of apolipoprotein B, which contributes to 'bad' cholesterol."
